HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss athletics department will interview former Golden Eagles about their favorite memories of Brett Favre as No. 4 enters the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Aug. 6. Running back Tony Smith is the focus in Monday's edition.
Smith joined the backfield in the midst of his career upon initially being listed as a receiver. Favre was his quarterback the last two years in Hattiesburg, and the first of those seasons marked the famous 27-24 upset of Alabama in Birmingham.
"Brett was a guy that could make you believe you could overcome and achieve anything," Smith said. "That particular game and its improbable circumstances stands out to me."
Smith, who played three of his five NFL seasons in Atlanta, is best-known in the NFL sphere for being the first-round draft pick that was included in the 1991 Favre trade to Green Bay. Smith was unfortunately on injured reserve for the Panthers' 1995 team that faced the Packers in the NFC Championship game and unable to compete against his old teammate on one of the league's biggest stages.
Favre's tens of thousands of huddles in his collegiate and professional career could have led to passes, rushes, touchdowns or interceptions, but Smith can confirm one thing did remain the same.
"Having those motivating words in your head, huddle after huddle, no matter what was in front of you or how you were feeling were some of my favorite memories [of Favre]," he said.
The ceremony for Favre's induction will be televised live on ESPN at 6 p.m. CT from Canton, Ohio.
