HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss baseball team opens a five-game week Tuesday when they play host to nationally ranked Louisiana-Lafayette in a 6 p.m., contest at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
The Golden Eagles (29-12) improved to No. 14 in the Collegiate Baseball poll, after spending time at No. 19 last week, while jumping into three other polls including a No. 14 ranking by Baseball America, a No. 25 nod by D1Baseball.com and at No. 28 by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.
With its first-ever series win at Pete Taylor Park over Rice in three one-run games, Southern Miss continues to be at the top of the Conference USA standings, leading Rice by one game and Florida Atlantic - who they play in Boca Raton, Fla., this weekend - by two games.
General admission tickets will be $5 each for this game and with a $2 Tuesday Promotion at concessions featuring $2 Hot Dogs and $2 Popcorn. Additionally, all Faculty and Staff members can purchase Buy One, Get One Free tickets with their Southern Miss Faculty and Staff ID Cards. This applies to the $5 GA tickets as well as the normal priced chairback seats.
Prior to the game, the Southern Miss football team will receive its Conference USA West Division championship rings, while Mississippi Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann will be throwing out a ceremonial first pitch in support of National Autism Awareness Month.
The Golden Eagles meet the Ragin' Cajuns (27-13) for the first time since the 2014 campaign and look to snap a five-game losing streak to the visiting squad. This will be the second-straight game played in Hattiesburg in the series.
Graduate transfer Jake Sandlin, a centerfielder from Evans, Ga., continues to lead the Golden Eagles in hitting as he continues to flirt with the .400 mark by boasting a .395 average after getting six hits in the Rice series. Senior first baseman ranks next at .366, while senior shortstop Nick Dawson ranks third at .356 and junior rightfielder Dylan Burdeaux holds a .323 hitting mark.
Southern Miss will send freshman left-hander Stevie Powers (0-1, 4.29 ERA) to the mound against the Cajuns, while UL counters with sophomore right-hander Evan Guillory (4-3, 3.10 ERA).
Following the UL contest, the Golden Eagles then hit the road for four-straight games, starting Wednesday at New Orleans and then at Florida Atlantic.
