RELAYS RECORDS BROKEN AT BUCCANEER INVITE

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. -- The Southern Miss men's and women's indoor track and field team's break two relay records at Buccaneer Invitational on the campus of East Tennessee State during the two-day meet.
"Today we competed well through out all the event areas. We had people qualifying for the finals in many event areas and we came away with five meet champions," said head coach Jon Stuart. "This was a long meet, with tough travel, but our kids handled it great, and competed very well. This is very encouraging as we head into the championship season."
The Golden Eagles turned in two school records and five individual meet champions.
The women's 4x400m relay team consisting of Adrianna Allen, Modesty Lorick, Mariam Kromah, and Talia Thompson ran a time of 3:46.64 to win the event and break the previous record of 3:47.45. The men's 4x400m relay finished the relay in second place. The relay that consisted of Derrick Johnson, Elbert Rogers, Vincent Karger, and Lorenzen Burton ran a time of 3:15.66 to break the previous school record of 3:16.28.
In the women's 60m hurdles, Modesty Lorick ran a time of 8.68 in the finals to win the event. Teammate Vallerie Norgaisse finished in the third place with a time of 8.82.
In the women's 400m, school record holder Mariam Kromah ran a time of 55.83 to win the event. On the men's side of the 400m, Elbert Rogers won the event with a time of 48.18. Teammate Lorenzen Burton finished in seventh place with a time of 49.51.
Sophomore Alondra Hoyos captured her first event win in the women's 3000m with a 10:21.85.
"Quarter milers ran great with Elbert Rogers and Mariam Kromah bringing home meet wins. Kromah came back and led the 4x4 relay that included Talia Thompson, Modest Lorick, and Adriana Allen to a Southern Miss all-time best and a win," said Stuart.
In the women's shot put, senior Kayla Taylor threw the shot 13.48m for a fourth place finish. Teammate Brashe Wood finished in eighth place with a throw of 12.30m. In the women's weight throw, freshman Danisha Jones threw the weight 16.25m for a fifth place throw. Wood finished in eighth place with a 15.81m.
"The throws squad as a whole showed nice improvement and I was really pleased with the technical execution we had this weekend. The group is starting to put the pieces together, we had three season best performances today and we are starting to pick up a lot of momentum," said assistant coach Jennifer Svoboda. "I'm excited to see this group get after it the next couple weeks."
Trista Barry recorded a score of 3308 in her first pentathlon of the year.
Other top ten performance include newcomer Annette Gaskins who recorded a mark of 5.57m in the women's long jump for an eighth place finish. Courtney Filliben in the 800m with a fifth place finish in a time of 2:17.76. Jamar Sims in the long jump with a ninth place finish with a jumped a jump of 6.94m. Kadaria Thompson and LaSpencia Brown finished in seventh and eighth place, respectively in the 60m with times of 7.76 and 7.81.
"The last two days have been great in terms of seeing some new competition and working on being more consistent. Everyone took a step forward this weekend, especially Trista Barry who put together a 3,308 point pentathlon which is a PR by 377 points," said assistant coach John Ellis.
The Golden Eagles get back to action next weekend at the Samford Invite in Birmingham, Ala.
