Golden Eagles Have Strong Showing at Samford Open

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Southern Miss men's and women's indoor track and field teams had a strong showing at the Samford Invitational in Birmingham, Ala.
Southern Miss had one event winner in Kristin Zarrella. Zarrella ran a time of 2:11.98 in the 800m. Teammate Courtney Filliben finished the race with a time of 2:16.68 to finish tenth.
Both of the 4x400 relay teams broke school records. The men, consisting of Elbert Rogers, Vincent Karger, Derrick Johnson, and Lorenzen Burton, ran a time of 3:14.21 to finish in third place. The women, consisting of Mariam Kromah, Adriana Allen, Modesty Lorick, and Vallerie Norgaisse, ran a time of 3:45.83 to also finish place third in the event.
In the women's high jump, Trista Barry jumped a height of 1.70m for a second place finish. Stephany Purdue finished with a height of 1.65m to finish in fifth.
Daphney Stanford ran a time of 10:12.88 in the 3000m to finish in the race in third place.
Shotputter Kayla Taylor recorded a best of 13.87m for a third place finish. Teammate Brashe Wood finished with a mark of 12.05m to place tenth.
In the women's 200m, Kromah ran a time of 24.17 for a third place finish.
Other Golden Eagles in the top ten include newcomer Emron Gibbs who had an eighth place finish in the weight throw with a mark of 14.57m. Danish Jones with a ninth place finish in the weight throw with a mark of 16.41m. Annette Gaskins with a ninth place finish in the long jump with a mark of 5.43m. Jamar Sims with an eighth place finish in the long jump with a mark of 6.90m. Modesty Lorick with a tenth place finish in the 60m hurdles in a time of 8.72. Derrick Johnson in eighth place finish in the 60m in a time of 6.96. Dana Dillistone with a sixth place finish in the one mile with a time of 5:09.08. Adriana Allen with a sixth place finish in the 400m with a time of 55.14.
The Golden Eagles return back to action Feb. 19 at the LSU Twilight Classic in Baton Rouge, La.
