Lady Eagle Basketball Heads West, Plays at UTEP

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss women's basketball team will make its second trip to the state of Texas when the Lady Eagles travel to UTEP for a Thursday night game against the Miners in an 8:05 p.m. tip.
Southern Miss Preview
The Lady Eagles (10-7, 3-3) are coming off a 72-37 loss at Louisiana Tech on Jan. 24. Caitlin Jenkins led the way with a double-double performance, scoring 10 points and hauling in 10 rebounds off the bench. Lashyra Cotton added nine points and six rebounds. The 37 points were the lowest point total this season.
Jenkins currently leads the team with 12.6 point per game and 10.4 rebounds, while Dinkins adds 11.8. Jayla King adds 5.0 rebounds. Dinkins and Keri Jewett-Giles are handing out 3.5 assists per game each.
Southern Miss is averaging 62.5 points and 38.2 rebounds per game while shooting 40.6 percent from the field and 63.7 percent from the line. The Lady Eagles are giving up 60.2 points on 39.3 percent shooting. They are forcing opponents into 19.6 turnovers per game.
A Look at UTEP
UTEP (16-1, 7-0) is coming off a 69-57 win over FIU on Jan. 23 and is riding an eight-game winning streak while sitting atop of the C-USA standings. Starr Breedlove scored a team-best 20 points while Lulu McKinney added 17 points and Jenzel Nash and Sparkle Taylor chipped in 12 points each. Nash and Tamara Seda had eight rebounds apiece.
In her 15th season at UTEP and her 20th overall, Head Coach Keitha Adams owns a 263-182 record at UTEP. She welcomes six newcomers and returns 10 letterwinners from last season's squad.
Nash leads a quartet of Miners in scoring, averaging 14.0 points with Cameasha Turner, Taylor and Breedlove adding 11.9, 11.5 and 11.1 points, respectively. Nash is also the top rebounder at 5.8 rebounds per game.
The Miners are averaging 70.9 points and 40.7 rebounds per game while shooting 42.3 percent from the field and 68.2 percent from the line. UTEP is forcing opponents into 21.9 turnovers per game while pocketing 12.1 steals per game.
Series Notes:
This is the 16th meeting between the two teams. UTEP leads the overall series 10-5 that began in 1993. Southern Miss won the first two meetings between the teams. UTEP has won three of the last five meetings.

Following the UTEP game, the Lady Eagles remain on the road for a game against UTSA on Jan. 30 at UTSA. Tip-off for the UTSA game is 2 p.m.
