HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Fans visiting Pete Taylor Park this spring may not initially notice the latest addition to the ballpark, but it is one that will benefit both fans and players, starting Feb. 19, when the Golden Eagles open their baseball season at home against Eastern Illinois.
That newest addition involves the installation of padding to the entire outfield fence, as well as the wall that separates the playing field with the bullpen and batting cage area. The project took several days to complete last week and was performed by SportsGraphics of Clarion, Iowa.
"On the surface, this might not seem like a big change for Pete Taylor Park," said Southern Miss baseball coach Scott Berry. "The padding on the walls, though, adds not only an aesthetic beauty to the park that really gives our sponsor signs in the outfield a cleaner and nicer look, but it also adds a huge benefit to the players in terms of safety during both practice and in games.
"Our program has taken great pride in its baseball facility and this is the latest in a long line of improvements that we have been able to make over the years to make Pete Taylor Park not only a special place for our fans to come watch us, but also a great place to play."
The monies for this project were made possible through the proceeds of the annual Scott Berry Golf Classic each fall, as well as a donation from the Forrest County Board of Supervisors.
The Golden Eagles begin full practice is Friday, Jan. 29.
