
Soccer Edged on Road by ULM

MONROE, La. -- The Southern Miss soccer team concluded a four-game road swing with a 1-0 loss to ULM on Friday night. The Warhawks (5-4-1) netted a goal early and the Golden Eagles (2-3-3) were unable to score the equalizer.
The teams were equally matched as the two squads nearly matched each other in shots. ULM held a slight edge in shots, 15-14, while posting nine shots on goal compared to six by Southern Miss.
Kierstin Bradley led the offensive charge, taking five shots on the night. The freshman placed two of the shots on goal. Fellow freshman Mary Kate Smith attempted three shots, leading the team with three on goal.
Brittany Taylor went the distance between the posts at goalkeeper for the Golden Eagles. The junior posted eight saves in 90 minutes of action, taking the hard-luck loss.
ULM used a pair of keepers to keep the Black and Gold off of the scoreboard. Brooke-Ly Scroggins and Julia Idal Gonzalez combined for the shutout, recording two and four saves respectively.
In the 14th minute, Danielle Sabathe broke the scoreless tie. ULM's Kelley O'Dwyer passed the ball to Mariah Mitchell who crossed the ball into the box. Sabathe headed the ball into the goal to give the home team a 1-0 advantage.
The Golden Eagles were unable to score the equalizer before halftime. In the second stanza, the two teams played even with both lineups registering 10 shots. Southern Miss put three shots on frame in the second half. The Eagles relied on good defense in the second half to keep the game close as Taylor posted six of her eight stops in the second period.
Southern Miss returns home for a game on Sunday afternoon against South Alabama. The Golden Eagles and Jaguars kickoff at 4:00 p.m. at the Southern Miss Soccer Complex.
