JACKSON, Miss. -- The Southern Miss soccer team wrapped up its opening weekend with a 1-1 tie on the road against Jackson State on Sunday afternoon.
The Jackson State Tigers opened up the game with a goal by sophomore Kamri Brown in the eighth minute. Despite generating many scoring opportunities in the first half, the Golden Eagles could not retaliate until after halftime. Junior Kay Kay Hypolite assisted freshman Kierstin Bradley in the 54th minute for the tying goal.
The Golden Eagles ended the match with 27 shots, including 11 shots on goal, compared to the Tigers' six and four, respectively.
Although it was not the result Southern Miss was looking for, Head Coach Mohammed El-Zare is pleased with how his team played. Stephanie Garcia, Adriana Garcia and Ashton Stennis all had outstanding performances in the attack, leading the Golden Eagles in shots.
"I am very happy with the effort and energy level," El-Zare said after the game. "The girls gave it everything they had, and they left it all on the field. We unfortunately gave up a soft goal tonight. Soccer is a cruel game. You can dominate and control a game but still not end up with a result."
The 1-0-1 Golden Eagles are in the right state of mind to continue into the 2015 season.
"We did what we needed to do in terms of creating chances, but we just could not put the ball away. It is a growing process to figure out how to get results. We are pushing forward and it will come," El-Zare said.
Southern Miss soccer is back in action Friday at Nicholls at 4:00 p.m. The team returns home for a game against Louisiana-Lafayette on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
