HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss baseball team continues its eight-game road swing this weekend when they travel to Ruston to face Louisiana Tech in a three-game Conference USA series at J.C. Love Field.
The three single games are set for 4 p.m., Friday, 3 p.m., Saturday and 1 p.m., Sunday.
The Golden Eagles (12-7-1 overall, 2-1 C-USA) sport a three-game winning streak after starting the road swing with a 6-5, 11-inning victory over UNO in New Orleans on Tuesday.
Scott Berry's team registered its 10th double-digit hit contest against the Privateers as Taylor Braley led the way with three hits to up his team-best batting average to .359. Connor Barron, who extended his current team-best hitting streak to five games against the Privateers, is next at .355. Matt Durst ranks third on the Golden Eagle batting category with a .342 mark.
As for pitching, Southern Miss holds a 2.20 earned run average this season which ranks first in C-USA and 13th in the latest national statistics. The staff, which has three shutouts this season, has displayed excellent weekend starting pitching. The trio of starters, consisting of right-handed pitchers Christian Talley, Cody Carroll and James McMahon, has combined to register a 6-3 record with a 1.92 earned run average.
The renewal of this baseball series happened last season, after the two teams took a four-year hiatus in playing each other. Last year's games marked the Bulldogs' inaugural season in C-USA and the Gold-en Eagles swept that series in Hattiesburg. This series dates back to 1922, but the two schools have only met 30 times on the diamond with Southern Miss holding a 17-12-1 advantage.
LA Tech enters the weekend with an 8-9 overall record and a 0-3 mark in C-USA. The Bulldogs were swept at Rice last weekend in their opening-league series, but led as late as the eighth inning in two of those road contests before falling to the Owls.
Following the LA Tech series, the Golden Eagles return to the road on Tuesday, when they travel to Trustmark Park in Pearl to face in-state foe Mississippi State. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m.
