HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss baseball team continues its seven-game road swing this weekend when they travel to the state of Alabama to face Troy in a three-game weekend set at Riddle-Pace Field.
The Golden Eagles (3-3-1) take on the Trojans at 6 p.m., Friday, followed by 1 p.m., single contests on both Saturday and Sunday.
Southern Miss looks to rebound from three one-run losses and a tie over its last four games after opening the season with a three-game sweep of Murray State. Pitching has been solid for the Golden Eagles, as the team has posted a 2.29 earned run average to go along with five quality starts (at least six innings pitched and three or fewer earned runs) to start the year. The team has fanned 58 and walked just 16 in 59 innings of work.
Despite losing a pair of games and tying once last weekend, the Golden Eagle starters combined for a 0.45 ERA in those three starts over 20 innings, while surrendering just 12 hits, five runs (one earned), five walks to go along with 20 strikeouts as the right-handed trio of Christian Talley, Cody Carroll and James McMahon each notched quality starts.
The Golden Eagle offense started the year strong with double-digit hits in each of their first four games, but averaged just 5.3 hits per contest in the three contests last weekend. In addition, the team has had issues defensively committing 12 errors over the first seven games.
This weekend, Southern Miss plays a Troy squad that has jumped out to a 6-2 record having defeated Samford, 6-0, in its midweek contest. Troy also played in the COX Diamond Invitational last weekend in Pensacola, even though they did not meet the Golden Eagles, and posted a 2-1 record in the event.
The two teams have met 25 times in their baseball histories with Southern Miss holding a 14-11 advantage dating back to the 1998 campaign. Southern Miss took two of three games from the Trojans in Hattiesburg last season.
Following this weekend's series, the Golden Eagles travel to South Alabama, Tuesday, to complete the road swing in a 6:30 p.m., contest, before getting back home on Wednesday to face Ole Miss in the school's annual Blackout game. Game time for that tilt is 6 p.m., at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
