Rain Forces First Tie in over 30 Years

PENSACOLA, Fla. - The Southern Miss baseball team finished its three-game tournament schedule Saturday in the COX Diamond Invitational by settling for its first tie in over 30 years due to rain that caused the Bayfront Stadium field to become unplayable to continue.
The Golden Eagles (3-3-1) and Nicholls were tied at 1-1 when they game was halted in the bottom of the seventh at 8:39 p.m. The game was called 51 minutes later, ending the game. It was the program's first tie game since April 21, 1984, when Southern Miss ended in an 11-11 deadlock with Mississippi College in six innings in the nightcap of a doubleheader.
Southern Miss scored its lone run in the opening inning on a Matt Durst single, plating Connor Barron who walked to open the game.
The Colonels (4-1-1) then answered in the fourth with an RBI single from Darrius Knight.
Both starting pitchers went the distance as Golden Eagle James McMahon allowed a run on just two hits with two walks and a career-high of eight strikeouts over six innings in his second career outing.
Colonel starter Grant Borne gave up a run on three hits with two walks and five strikeouts over seven innings.
The Golden Eagles now continues its eight-game road swing Tuesday, when they travel to ULM for a 6 p.m. contest.
