HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The countdown to the Lady Eagle season-opener against Alabama State in the Preseason WNIT on Nov. 13 is only six days away. Tip-off is set for 11 a.m. as the game has been designated as "Education Day".
Junior guard Brittanny Dinkins is the featured player in the countdown.
Dinkins, a native of Miami, Fla., is one of just five returning letterwinners from last year's team. According to head coach Joye Lee-McNelis, she will be counted on to provide leadership.
"Brittanny Dinkins has been that player who has stepped up in our preseason practice and taken that leadership role," McNelis said. "She has been very vocal and encouraging to the new players as well as the returning players."
Dinkins played in all 36 games last season while averaging 5.7 points and 2.3 rebounds per game. She was third on the team in assists and finished with 42 steals. She registered eight games with double figure scoring. She dished out a career-high 11 assists against William Carey. As a freshman, Dinkins averaged 9.2 points and was named to the C-USA All-Freshman team. She earned a pair of Freshmen of the Week honors.
Prior to coming to Southern Miss, Dinkins was a standout player at Miami Norland Senior High School under Coach Carla Harris-Curry. She averaged 22 points, four rebounds, 8.5 assists, and three steals per game. She was a McDonald All-American nominee while receiving all-county awards. She was rated No. 91 player in the country and No. 20 in the point guard position according to ESPN HoopsGurlz. She also played in the Dade vs. Broward and Dade vs. Palm Beach All-Star games. She also earned first team all-state and first team all-Dade County accolades. She is the daughter of Ebony Dinkins and plans to major in media production.
