HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- It's just one day remaining for the final countdown on the Lady Eagle season-opener against Alabama State in the Preseason WNIT at 11 a.m. for Education Day.
Coming off one of the more successful seasons in recent years, head coach Joye Lee-McNelis, staff and players have given much of the credit to the fans. In their final game of the season in 2014-15, the Lady Eagles saw a record crowd witness some entertaining basketball to say the least. Southern Miss quickly became that team that made a game interesting in the latter stages. According to McNelis, it didn't matter how far behind that team was, the feeling was they could come back and win.
And come back and win they did or several occasions. At one point during the season, McNelis referred to her team as the "cardiac kids." With that said, McNelis is also quick to give credit where credit is due.
"The fans really made the difference in each game we played in the WNIT last year," McNelis said. "We don't win the games we did without the crowd. Without a doubt, these were the loudest it's been in the coliseum during a women's basketball game that I've been a part of. They gave us energy and our players feed off that energy. We were expecting large crowds, but it far exceeded our expectations."
