MIAMI, Fla. -- The Southern Miss women's soccer team fought hard for an equalizer against FIU in Miami, but fell 1-0 to the Panthers after surrendering a goal off a deflection in the first two minutes of the second half. This was the sixth game this season that the Golden Eagles (3-8-3, 1-4-0 C-USA) lost by one goal.
The first half was scoreless, with FIU earning three shots on goal compared to the Golden Eagles' one.
Freshman Kiersten Bradley created two solid scoring opportunities in the half for Southern Miss. Bradley scored the Golden Eagles' lone goal against Charlotte last Friday for their first conference win.
The Golden Eagles had one more chance before half. In the 40th minute, Katie Richmond fired a header on frame that was saved by FIU keeper Nevena Stojakovic.
The second half opened up with an FIU goal. In the 47th minute, Talia McMurtrie's shot was deflected past goalkeeper Brittany Taylor into the left corner. Lyrik Fryer had the assist.
The Southern Miss squad pushed for an equalizer for the rest of the half. Mary Kate Smith had a shot go wide in the 61st minute, while Allie Baumhower's shot went high in the 80th minute.
Bradley had the team's final opportunity in the 85th minute, when her shot on target was stopped by Stojakovic.
Despite conceding an unlucky goal in the match, goalkeeper Brittany Taylor put on another solid performance between the pipes. Taylor made five saves for the Golden Eagles, bringing her season total to 76. The junior is now only eight saves away from being the Southern Miss record holder for total career saves.
Southern Miss is back on the pitch on Sunday against Florida Atlantic. Kickoff is in Boca Raton at 12:00 p.m. CT.
