The countdown continues for the season-opener for the Lady Eagles. Jessica Powers will be featured in today's countdown.
Powers stand at 6'6", however, she is not the tallest player to don a Lady Eagle uniform. The Lady Eagles tallest player was 6'8" Courtney Todaro who played in 2001-02. Powers is expected to a big presence in the paint. She sat out last season, but has worked hard in the off-season to improve strength and conditioning. She definitely adds depth to the front court. She has potential to provide solid impact for the Lady Eagles. She possesses excellent shot-blocking skills.
Prior to coming to Southern Miss, she attended Pearl River Central High School where she averaged a triple-double in her final two seasons with 14.0 points, 10.0 rebounds and 10.0 blocked shots per game. She was a candidate for Mississippi Player of the Year as a senior. She was named to the 2013-14 Clarion Ledger Dandy Dozen. Powers earned 8-5A Defensive Player of the Year and was named to the Junior Mississippi All-Star Game (North vs. South). She was also named Player of the Game against D'Iberville when she recorded a triple-double with 16 blocks shots, 14 rebounds and 24 points. She led the nation as a sophomore in blocked shots. She is the daughter of Scott and Melissa Powers and has one brother, Ralph. She plans to major in journalism.
