
Golden Eagles Come Up Short in Final Home Match

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- In their last home game of the season, the Southern Miss women's soccer team fell to C-USA leaders North Texas 2-0. The Golden Eagles are now 4-11-3 and 2-7-0 in the conference.
The Mean Green got on the scoreboard early. Amber Haggerty scored in the ninth minute off a pass inside the box from Karla Pineda. Haggerty's shot from seven yards out zipped past Southern Miss keeper Brittany Taylor for her fourth goal of the season.
For the rest of the first half, the Golden Eagles battled for an equalizer, earning two good opportunities on frame from Katie Richmond and Kierstin Bradley.
North Texas struck again 15 minutes into the second half. Pineda's shot from 20 yards out was saved by Taylor, but the Mean Green's Rachel Holden was there to head in the rebound.
Southern Miss had an opportunity to get on the board in the 67th minute, when Stephanie Garcia's shot was blocked and then picked up by Mary Kate Smith, whose shot was saved by North Texas keeper Jackie Kerestine.
Another great chance for the Golden Eagles came from Bradley, whose header off a cross went just wide of the goal in the 73rd minute. Bri Schubeck and Somer Jones also earned shots toward the end of the second half for the Golden Eagles.
The Mean Green ended the match with 13 shots (five on goal) compared to the Golden Eagles' seven (three on goal). Taylor made three saves, bringing her season total to 93.
The Golden Eagles play their last match of the season next Friday, Oct. 30 in Birmingham against UAB. Kickoff is slated for 7:00 p.m.
