HATTIESBURG, Miss.- Marshall scored the first nine points of the game and never looked back, as Southern Miss fell, 69-54, Thursday night at Reed Green Coliseum.
Matt Bingaya led all scorers with 19 points while grabbing seven rebounds. Chip Armelin scored 16 points. Norville Carey recorded his second consecutive double-double, scoring 11 points and pulling down 10 boards.
"I think the guys really wanted to play hard tonight, but we just didn't have any emotion to do it," said Southern Miss head coach Doc Sadler. "That's on me. They wanted to do everything, we just weren't at the level that you have to be at."
Marshall (6-15, 2-6 C-USA) scored the first nine points of the game. After trading jumpers, the Golden Eagles scored six straight points to pull to within 11-8 five minutes into the game. However, Marshall hit three straight three-pointers as they went on a 10-0 run over the next 3:31 to take its largest lead of the half, 21-8.
Carey and Armelin hit baskets, but a three by Devince Boykins kept it a 12-point game. Southern Miss (6-13, 1-7) then went on a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to 24-19, but two straight threes pushed the lead out to 11.
After Armelin made one of two free throws, Aleksa Nikolic made a layup for a 32-20 Thundering Herd lead with 3:51 to play. Kevin Holland made a driving layup and Bingaya made one of two from the line, but Nikolic converted a three-point play. With six seconds to go in the half, Shadell Millinghaus stole the inbounds pass and drove in for a layup, but Marshall led, 35-25, at the break.
Marshall scored the first five points of the second half, as the Golden Eagles missed their first six shots. Kevin Holland's three-pointer five minutes into the half put Southern Miss on the board and Carey's jumper cut the deficit to 10 at 40-30. However, it would get no closer, as the Thundering Herd led by as many as 21.
Southern Miss was just 19-of-52 (36.5%) from the field and 2-of-17 (11.8%) from three. Marshall connected on 47.4% (27-of-57) from the floor and 37.9% (11-of-29) from three. The Thundering Herd outrebounded Southern Miss, 41-to-32.
