"We played really good soccer tonight," said head coach Mohammed El-Zare. "We played attacking soccer. We created enough chances, but we have to finish our chances. I thought we controlled the game with our possessions. I am proud of the effort and the hard work that the players are putting in. it is just a matter of time before things fall our way. Things will turn around. We just have to continue to play hard and continue to work and get better."
Offensively, Southern Miss held a slight 11-to-10 edge in shots and an 8-to-6 advantage in shots on goal. Anya Koren scored a goal in the game off of an assist from Somer Jones. The goal was Koren's second of the season, while the helper was Jones' first of the year.
Defensively, true freshman Shelby Presnell earned her first collegiate start at goal. She allowed two goals while notching four saves.
Southern Miss was the first team to score, netting a goal in the 49th minute. Jones passed the ball to Koren who slipped it past the goalie to give the Golden Eagles a 1-0 advantage. The goal was the first allowed by the Lions this season and snapped a nearly 500-minute scoreless streak by the Southeastern Louisiana defense.
SLU responded with a goal in the 63rd minute. The Lions' Katie Noonan scored an unassisted goal to knot the score at 1-1.
The game remained 1-1 until the 90th minute. With just 15 seconds remaining in regulation, SLU's Maggie Ramsey headed a pass from Noonan past the Southern Miss goalie for the game-winning goal.
