
Men's Basketball Falls to LSU, 87-67

BATON ROUGE, La. - Southern Miss dropped its third straight game, falling 87-67 at LSU, Monday night at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.
Chip Armelin scored a career-high 28 points while pulling down six rebounds. Matt Bingaya scored 13 points and Davon Hayes added 11. Jeremiah Eason grabbed six boards.
Hayes and Armelin hit back-to-back three-pointers to start the game. After an LSU free throw, Armelin made a jumper to give Southern Miss (5-6) an 8-1 lead four minutes into the game.
The Tigers scored five straight points, but Armelin and Hayes followed with a pair of baskets. Jarell Martin made a layup, but Hayes hit his second three to give the Golden Eagles a 15-8 lead with 13:57 to play in the first half.
LSU (10-2) scored seven straight points to tie the game at 15, but Kevin Holland found Keljin Blevins on the right block and an easy layup. Jordan Mickey then scored on a putback dunk before Bingaya made a driving layup, giving the Golden Eagles a 19-17 Southern Miss lead with 10:26 to play.
However, Southern Miss made just one basket in its next 12 possessions, as LSU went on a 24-3 run over the next seven minutes. Armelin then hit three straight threes to cut the deficit to 13.
LSU followed with five consecutive points before Armelin hit a jumper to close the half, as the Golden Eagles trailed, 49-33.
Armelin started the second half by hitting his fifth three of the night, a new career-high. Tim Quarterman then converted a three-point play.
Hayes then converted a three-point play of his own to bring it back to 13, but the Tigers went on a 9-0 run, as Southern Miss would get no closer than 16 the rest of the way.
The Black and Gold shot just 40.4% (23-of-57) from the field and 36.0% (9-of-25) from three. LSU was 35-of-71 (49.3%) from the floor and 6-of-19 (31.6%) from three. Southern Miss was outrebounded, 46-to-28.
Jarell Martin led LSU with 24 points and nine rebounds. Jordan Mickey (14 pts, 10 rbs) and Quarterman (12 pts, 14 rbs) each recorded double-doubles. Jalyn Patterson and Keith Hornsby added 10 points apiece.
Southern Miss begins conference play this Saturday, January 3, when it hosts Louisiana Tech. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT.
