Lady Eagle Basketball Closes Out Non-Conference Schedule at Nicholls

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Lady Eagle basketball team plays their final game of the 2014 year, trying to snap a three-game losing streak when Southern Miss take on Nicholls on Dec. 29.

Southern Miss Preview
The Lady Eagles (6-4) are coming off a 68-66 loss at Ole Miss in which Tamara Jones scored a team-best 16 points while pulling down a team-best eight rebounds. Kierra Jordan and Jerontay Clemons added 10 points each. Southern Miss only had 16 turnovers, but Ole Miss scored 20 points off the miscues.
Jones currently leads the team in scoring and rebounding with 14.6 points and 6.7 rebounds per game. Clemons adds 12.4 points and Jordan is next at 9.4 points. Clemons and Jordan also contribute 6.1 and Jordan 6.2 rebounds per game, respectively.
The Lady Eagles are averaging 69.2 points on 46.0 percent shooting from the field and 36.3 rebounds per game. Southern Miss is connecting on 62.5 percent from the line. Southern Miss is giving up 60.2 points on 37.3 percent shooting from the field while holding a +3.1 turnover margin against its opponents.
A Look at Nicholls
Nicholls is 4-6 after a 57-49 win over UTSA on Dec. 21 in Lubbock, Texas. Tia Charles led the Colonels with a game-high 23 points while Shay Arnick and Jenny Nash added 12 and 11 points, respectively. Nicholls made up a 10-point deficit at of the start of the second half. The Colonels held the Roadrunners to 19 points in the latter half while scoring 35.
Nash leads Colonels in scoring and rebounding with a 12.8 points and 7.1 rebounds per game averages. Charles next in scoring at 7.5 points.
Head DoBee Plaisance is in her seventh season at Nicholls.
Nicholls is averaging 58.3 points on 35.2 percent shooting from the field and 36.0 rebounds per game. The Colonels are shooting 65.1 percent from the free throw line and have connected on 57-of-208 from behind the arc.
Series Record: Southern Miss vs. Nicholls
This is the 16th meeting between the two teams dating back to the 1976-77 season. The two teams faced each other for the first time on December 11, 1976 in Reed Green Coliseum with the Lady Eagles winning that matchup. Southern Miss has won 10 out of the last 11 meetings between the two teams.
Next Up
Following the Nicholls game, the Lady Eagles will open their Conference USA slate on Jan. 4 when Southern Miss travels to Ruston, La., to face Louisiana Tech. Tip time is set for 3 p.m.
