PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Southern Miss scored its fewest points since 2005, falling at Drexel, 59-36, Sunday night.
Norville Carey, who made his first career start in his 68th game, was the only Golden Eagle in double-figures, scoring 16 points while also grabbing a team-high six rebounds. Matt Bingaya had seven points.
"We've got to understand that once you go on the road, it's a totally different basketball game that it is when you're at home," said Southern Miss head coach Doc Sadler. "There's not a team that could've given us a better lesson today than Drexel. They gave us a less on how to control the basketball, control the game, defense, everything about it, they were in total control from start to finish."
Carey scored two quick baskets to give Southern Miss a 4-0 lead. However, the Golden Eagles missed their next nine shots, while Drexel made five straight to go on an 11-0 run. Carey made six of his first seven shots, while the rest of the team missed their first 11.
By the time Dallas Anglin hit a three for the Golden Eagle's first points from someone other than Carey, only five minutes remained in the first half and Southern Miss was down, 29-17.
Damion Lee made a layup, and after Jeremiah Eason made one-of-two free throws, Lee made a pair from the charity stripe. Armelin drained a three-pointer with 1:29 left, but a two more free throws from Lee send Drexel into halftime with a 35-21 lead.
The teams traded baskets through the first four minutes of the second half. After a layup from Eason, Drexel got dunks from Tyshawn Myles and Rodney Williams. Bingaya followed with a dunk of his own, but the Dragons went on a 14-3 run to put the game away.
The Black and Gold shot just 31.9% (15-of-47) from the field, including just 15.4% (2-of-13) from three. Drexel connected on 24-of-50 (48.0%) from the floor and 6-of-14 (42.9%) from three. The Dragons also outrebounded Southern Miss, 38-24.
Lee led all scorers with 22 points. Williams had 12 points and five rebounds and Myles added 10 boards.
Southern Miss begins a three-game homestand this Wednesday, Dec. 3, when it hosts Summit League champion North Dakota State. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
