Men's Tennis Knocks Off New Mexico State, 4-2

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The Southern Miss men's tennis team won its second straight match in the UNLV Classic with a 4-2 win over New Mexico State Sunday morning.
Southern Miss upped its record to 5-2 overall.
"I am proud of the way the team came out and played today," Coach Ki Kroll said. "We had some players step up and provide us with a couple of wins. I thought it was a total team effort. Andrew certainly battled at No. 2 singles and pulled out a win for us to clinch."
The Golden Eagles got off to a strong start as Southern Miss took the doubles' point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 spots. No. 60 Matt Frost and Andrew Goodwin downed Luis Ramirez and Marc Westgate (NMSU), 8-1. Inaki Belloso and Vasco Valverde claimed an 8-5 win over Yannick Blank and Germain Degardin (NMSU).
Valverde put the Eagles up 2-0 with a 6-3, 6-2 win in the No. 5 spot against Patrick Pfister (NMSU). New Mexico State got its first point of the match with a win at No. 1. Frost lost to Ramirez, 6-3, 6-3.
Brad Marriott battled at No. 6 to win 6-4, 6-4 over Blank for the 3-1 lead. Westgate added a point for New Mexico State at the no. 3 spot with a three-set win over Benjamin Feldmann, 6-7, 6-3, 6-1.
Southern Miss clinched the match after Goodwin battled Daniel Fernandez to a 7-5, 7-6 win.
Southern Miss will travel to Troy for a match on Feb. 9 at 1 p.m.
