HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss baseball team looks to snap a season-high three-game losing streak when they welcome Memphis for a three-game Conference USA series at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field this weekend.
Game times are set for 6 p.m., on Friday, 12 noon on Saturday and 1 p.m., Sunday. The Saturday game will be shown on FSN. Please check your local listings for the availability of the game in your area. That day's game is also Military/First Responders Appreciation Day. There will be special events surrounding that contest.
Despite losing Wednesday night 8-7 at South Alabama, the Golden Eagles exploded for 14 hits in the contest with five different Southern Miss players collecting multiple hits. Freshman Mason Robbins was one of three players to collect three hits to increase his team-high batting average to .366.
Junior Isaac Rodriguez added two hits against the Jaguars to extend his current team-best hitting streak to eight games, raising his season mark to .341. Senior Ashley Graeter, who started at third base for the first time in 31 games from his normal shortstop position after Travis Creel was a late scratch from the lineup because of an issue with his back sustained in batting practice, collected three hits as well to up his batting mark to .324.
Centerfielder Dillon Day holds a .300 batting average heading into the weekend, while junior first baseman Blake Brown - who had three hits against USA - is at .295 with team highs of six home runs and 32 RBI.
The Golden Eagles are set to throw junior righthander Andrew Pierce (4-2, 1.87 ERA) in the opener. Pierce threw nine shutout innings last Friday night against nationally ranked UCF in a 1-0, 14-inning contest and upped his season strikeout total to 62, while walking just nine for the year. Memphis counters with junior righthander Dan Langfield (5-4, 3.07 ERA).
On Saturday, Jake Drehoff looks to get back to his winning ways after coming off his shortest outing of the season last weekend of 4 2/3 innings against UCF. The southpaw, Drehoff, is 5-1 this season with a 3.66 ERA and will face sophomore lefty Sam Moll (4-3, 2.28 ERA) in the affair.
The Golden Eagles are undecided on a Sunday starter, while Memphis will throw senior righthander Chase Joiner (2-4, 5.01 ERA) in the finale.
