Men's Tennis Team Claims 5-2 over Lamar

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss men's tennis team posted its second straight win of the day when the Golden Eagles defeated Lamar, 5-2, on Sunday afternoon at the USM Tennis Courts.
Southern Miss improves to 7-5 overall while Lamar drops to 2-3.
The Golden Eagles took an early 1-0 lead in the match after sweeping the doubles' competition.
Freshmen Matt Frost and Brad Marriott started with an 8-3 win over Marton Horvath and Robert Lee on court one. Paulo Alvarado and Juan Escobar clinched the point on court two with an 8-4 victory over Carlos Valdenebro and Denis Ermilov. A few minutes later, Andrew Goodwin and Michael Elortegui ran their streak to seven consecutive wins with an 8-5 win over Bruno Snyder and Mikko Rajamaki.
Heading into singles' play, Goodwin made quick work of Dusan Savkovic on court six as he posted a 6-1, 6-1 win. Goodwin has won his last seven matches. Frost continued his winning ways this weekend as he knocked off Ermilov at No. 1 to push the Eagles' lead to 3-0.
Shortly afterwards, Lamar posted its first point of the match when Lee defeated Alvarado, 7-6 (4) and was up 4-3 when Alvarado defaulted the match on penalty points.
On court five, Snyder grinded out a 7-6 (4), 7-6 (2) win over Jovan Zeljkovic to get the score to 3-2. Escobar then clinched the match for Southern Miss with his 7-5, 6-4 victory at No. 4 over Valdenebro.
USM got its fifth point of the match as Inaki Belloso outlasted Horvath in the No. 3 position, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.
Southern Miss returns to action on Mar. 14 when the Golden Eagles travel to UT-Arlington. The Eagles will also play at SMU on Mar. 15.
