Men's Tennis Takes Down Marquette, 4-3

BOISE, Idaho - The Southern Miss men's tennis team claimed a 4-3 victory over Marquette in the first round of the Boise State Spring Classic Friday morning after a weather delay. The win snapped a four-match losing streak.
Southern Miss and Marquette battled to a 3-3 tie in the singles competition as Vukasin Teofanovic put Marquette up 1-0 with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Juan Escobar (USM) at No. 3 singles. Southern Miss came right back with a win at No. 5 singles when Andrew Goodwin downed Cameron Tehrani (MU), 6-1, 6-1.
Michael Elortegui gave USM a 2-1 lead with his 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 6 over Drake Kakar, but Marquette scored a point at No. 2 singles shortly afterwards. Dan Mamalat (MU) defeated Inaki Belloso to keep the match tied at 2-2.
Paula Alvarado and Jose Crowley battled in a three-setter, but Alvarado was able to come away with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 win at No.1 while Logan Collins (MU) ended the singles play with a 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-3 win over Jovan Zeljkovic at No. 4.
The match would come down to the doubles' point. Marquette duo of Jonathan Schwerin and Collins got the first doubles' win with an 8-2 win at No. 2 over Alvarado and Zeljkovic. Goodwin and Elortegui combo battled Tehrani and Teofanovic for an 8-5 win at No. 3. Belloso and Escobar outlasted Crowley and Mamalat at No. 1 to clinch the match for USM.
Southern Miss will play host Boise State in the second round.
