Lady Eagles Host Marshall in Military Appreciation Night

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss plays its third-straight home game when the Lady Eagles host Marshall on Thursday in a 7 p.m. tip.
The game has been designated as Military Appreciation Day. All active, reserved, and retired military personnel with a military ID can purchase $2 tickets. Col Parham and LTC Smith from Camp Shelby will be honorary coached and the Camp Shelby color guard will present the colors for the national anthem. All branches of the armed service will be recognized.

Southern Miss Preview
The Lady Eagles are coming off a 56-51 come-from-behind victory over Tulane last Sunday. Jamierra Faulkner scored a game-high 19 points including 17 in the second half. Niesha Pierce was the other Lady Eagle in double figure scoring with 16 points. Ance Celmina and Nitesha Pierce grabbed a team-high eight rebounds apiece for the Black and Gold. The Lady Eagles had a 14-2 edge in second chance points against the Green Wave and finished the game with 14 turnovers.
Faulkner now leads the team in scoring with a 16.6 point per game average with Tanecka Carey just right behind at 15.7. Carey also leads the team in rebounding at 6.2 boards per game. As a team, USM is shooting 40.9 percent from the field and 63.4 percent from the line while averaging 60.7 points and 36.7 rebounds per outing.
Scouting Marshall
Marshall is coming off a 40-37 win at UAB last Sunday. The Thundering Herd is 15-11 overall and 6-7 in league play. Shay Weaver led a trio of Herd players in scoring with 11 points while Erica Woods and Lateidra Elliott added 10 points each. Woods led the team with nine rebounds.
Marshall uses a balanced scoring as no Herd player is averaging in double figures. Elliott is the top scorer at 6.9 points followed by Woods at 6.6 and Jasmine Shaw at 6.2. Woods also is the top rebounder as she is averaging 6.4 rebounds per outing. As a team, the Herd offense is averaging 59.5 points per game while shooting 37.8 percent from the field and 64.9 percent from the line. Marshall is averaging 40.7 rebounds per contest. Coach Royce Chadwick is in his 11th season at Marshall.
Series Notes: Southern Miss vs. Marshall
This is the 15th meeting between the two teams dating back to the 2005-06 season. Southern Miss leads the overall series, 9-6, but Marshall has four out of the last five meetings.
What's Next
Following the Marshall game, Southern Miss will close out its home portion of its schedule, hosting UAB on Feb. 26. The lone senior Ewa Urbanowska will be honored in a post-game ceremony.
