HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss Interim Director of Athletics Jeff Hammond announced Thursday that Golden Eagle baseball will have a new radio baseball home when its season begins this weekend against Nicholls State.
The Golden Eagles will move to WKZW-FM (94.3) in the Hattiesburg/Laurel area, which is a 50,000-watt station and is a part of the Blakeney Communications, Inc., family of stations. The station will cover all 54 regular season contests and any postseason contests that the Golden Eagles will play in 2012.
"This upgrade to Southern Miss Baseball radio coverage is due in part to the hard work of our athletic staff, a great idea by interim CFO Larry Davis and our partnership with Blakeney Communications, Inc. which is owned and operated by Larry and Debbie Blakeney," said Hammond. "Larry and Debbie have always been willing to do whatever necessary to promote Southern Miss Athletics to include the Eagle Club and season tickets sales across all sports. We appreciate their support and willingness to make a difference."
WKZW-FM will be a part of the Southern Miss IMG Sports Network, the rights holder and producer of Southern Miss Athletics radio broadcasts since 2000, which also includes WJDX-AM (620) in Jackson, WFFF-FM (96.7) in Columbia and WUJM-FM (96.7) in Gulfport/Biloxi for baseball.
"Everyone at Blakeney Communications is excited that we will be continuing our partnership and great relationship with the University of Southern Mississippi by broadcasting Golden Eagle football, basketball, women's basketball and baseball for the next five years," said Larry Blakeney, President and CEO of Blakeney Communications. "We are particular happy that Southern Miss baseball games will have enhanced radio coverage in the Pine Belt and we wish the Golden Eagles great success."
The upgrade is part of a new five-year agreement that Blakeney Communications has signed with IMG College in which they will remain as the flagship station of the Southern Miss IMG Sports Network and the voice of Golden Eagle athletics in the Hattiesburg/Laurel area. IMG College is the rights holder for more than 200 of the nation's top collegiate properties including the NCAA and its 89 championships, NCAA Football, leading conferences and many of the most prestigious colleges and universities in the country.
