Lady Eagles Travel to UAB for Basketball Action

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Lady Eagle basketball team (6-14, 0-7) continues to look for their first Conference USA win after dropping the first seven games to start conference play. Southern Miss heads to UAB to play its fifth road game out of its last eight in a 2 p.m. tip on Sunday.

Southern Miss Preview
The Lady Eagles are coming off a hard-fought 70-63 loss to league-leader UTEP on Thursday. Jamierra Faulkner scored a team-high 20 points while handing out a season-high 11 assists. She also came up with eight steals. Niesha Pierce and Tanecka Carey added double figuring with 13 and 12 points, respectively.
Carey continues to lead the team in scoring and rebounding at 15.9 points and 6.3 rebounds per game with Faulkner is next at 15.6 points per contest. As a team, USM is shooting 40.2 percent from the field and 61.3 percent from the line while averaging 60.0 points and 36.9 rebounds per outing.
Scouting UAB
UAB is coming off a 47-40 win at Tulsa on Thursday. The Blazers had to withstand a late Tulsa rally for a 47-40 road victory. UAB used an 11-0 run to take a 40-26 lead with just under four minutes to play before Tulsa cut the lead to two points. Krisma Chapman led the way with 12 points while Amber Jones added 11.
Three Blazers are averaging in double figure scoring led by Amber Jones at 13.9 points while Karisma Chapman and LaShaunda Pratt add 13.6 and 11.4 points per game, respectively. Meagan Brown is the top rebounder with a 6.5 rebound per game average. As a team, the Blazers are shooting 34.7 percent from the field and 62.5 percent from the line while averaging 56.6 points and 38.5 rebounds per contest. UAB relies heavily on its defense as opponents are averaging only 48.2 points per game. Coach Audra Smith is in her eighth season at UAB.
The Series: Southern Miss vs. UAB
This is the 51st meeting between the two teams in a series that began in 1979 with UAB winning that matchup in Birmingham. The teams split the series last season with each winning at home.

Following the UAB game, Southern Miss continues its travels as the Lady Eagles head to Memphis to take on the Tigers on Feb. 2 at 7 p.m.
