HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Former Southern Miss outfielder Tyler Koelling was honored by the American Baseball Coaches Association by being selected a second-team outfielder on the 2011 Rawlings All-South Team in a release by the organization Wednesday afternoon.
The Golden Eagles finished 39-19 during Koelling's senior season and earned their ninth-straight postseason NCAA tournament appearance. Southern Miss also captured the Conference USA regular season co-championship.
Koelling, the 2011 Cellular South Ferris Trophy recipient for top collegiate baseball player in the state of Mississippi, finished the campaign with a .362 batting average to go along with 18 doubles, a triple, four home runs and 46 RBI. He was one of the toughest players in the country to strikeout this past season as he fanned just nine times during the campaign.
The Luling, La., native was a three-year starter for the Golden Eagles who finished his career with a career .326 batting average. He added 10 home runs over his 158-game Southern Miss career to go along with 112 runs batted in.
He was a 19th-round selection in this month's Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft by the Minnesota Twins and currently plays for the Elizabethton Twins of the Appalachian League (Rookie Level).
