Softball Drops Second Game 4-3

The Golden Eagles struck first in the opening inning when Taylor Brown drew a one-out walk and advanced to second on a base hit by Britney Dinelt. Jill Mathis then doubled to left to plate Brown with Dinelt advancing to third and scored off a sac fly by Michelle Takeda to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead.
The Knights scored their first run of the game in the bottom of the third as UCF led off the inning with back-to-back singles by Patrice Fee and Tawny Swan. UCF loaded the bases when Allie Jest was able to beat out a slap-hit to the pitcher. Fee scored when Vanessa Perez grounded out to the shortstop.
Southern Miss missed three opportunities to put runs on the board in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings after putting runners in scoring position. Chanell Thurman doubled in the fourth, but the Eagles couldn't push the run across. In the fifth, Brittany Lilly doubled with only one out and in the sixth. Dinelt led off with a base hit and advanced to second on a wild pitch with no outs.
In the bottom of the sixth, Natalie Land had a base hit to left, then stole second and moved to third on a sac bunt. Tiffany Lane had an RBI single down left field line and went to second on a deep fly to right. Fee drew a walk before Swan came up with a two-RBI triple to left center.
Heading into their final at bat, the Golden Eagles got a one-out single on a Christina Roosmalen pinch hit. Pinch runner Stephanie Shiflet advanced to second when Lilly singled through the left side. Southern Miss loaded the bases after Leslie LeJune singled up the middle. Brown followed with a single through the right side to score Shiflet, but Lilly was thrown out at home trying to score from second. UCF's Lacey Dinney then got Dinelt to pop out to second to end the game.
Gabby Luciani (2-5) took the loss, giving up four runs on seven hits and striking out three. Dinney (11-8) got the win as she gave up three runs on nine hits with four strikeouts.
Southern Miss recorded nine hits led by Dinelt and Lilly with two hits each for the Golden Eagles while Jest and Swan led UCF with two hits apiece.
The two teams will wrap up the series finale Sunday at 11 a.m. (CDT).
