Softball Drops First Game of Doubleheader, 3-2

Beth Dietrich (10-15) took the loss for the Eagles, giving up three run, only two were earned, on eight hits. Diana Rojas (8-11) got the win for the Knights surrendering two runs on eight hits.
The Golden Eagles struck early with a run in the first. Leslie LeJune led off the game with a double and moved third on an illegal pitch. Jill Mathis delivered an RBI sacrifice fly to put the Eagles on the scoreboard.
UCF answered in the bottom of the third when Vanessa Perez singled and was safe on a Natalie Land's fielder's choice. Both runners moved up 60-feet on a wild pitch. UCF tied the game when Perez scored on a wild pitch. UCF made it a 2-1 game when Tiffany Lane lined out to short, but Land scored off an error in the attempted double play.
The Golden Eagles squandered two scoring opportunities with leadoff hits as runners reached second base,
UCF tacked on a run in the home half of the sixth when Marissa Menendez singled and moved to second on a base hit by Patrice Fee. The Knights loaded the bases when Tawny Swan beat out a bunt with no outs. Menendez scored off Ashley Schmitt's single up the middle. Fee tried to score from second and was thrown out at the plate. The Eagles were able to get out of the inning without another run when Allie Jest lined into a double play.
Southern Miss got a run back in the visitor's half of the seven as Alexis Hurley led off the inning with a solo shot over left. Lilly then singled up the middle, but was out at second on a LeJune's fielder's choice. Taylor Brown reached base on an error by the second baseman, moving LeJune into scoring position, but Dinelt hit into a fielder's choice and Brown was out at second.
LeJune and Lilly led the way with two hits apiece.
