Tyler Koelling and Isaac Rodriguez each tallied two hits to lead the Golden Eagles, while Victor Ramos notched a career-best four hits for the Herd.
The Golden Eagles (28-9 overall, 7-3 C-USA) jumped on the visitors for four runs in the bottom of the first. Kameron Brunty walked to open the first before Koelling singled through the left side. B.A. Vollmuth drove home the game's first run with a sacrifice fly, before Marc Bourgeois knocked home a run with a double and Rodriguez and Mark Ellis each added RBI singles to end the scoring.
The game remained that way until the sixth when Marshall put up five runs on seven hits on Southern Miss starter Todd McInnis to take a 5-4 advantage.
USM, though, tied the score in the sixth with a RBI double from Ashley Graeter, before blowing open the game in the seventh with three more tallies.
Doleac put the Golden Eagles ahead for good with his go-ahead single, and USM then added two more runs on a passed ball and wild pitch, respectively.
Chase Horn, who came in to relieve McInnis in the sixth, kept the Herd (15-21, 2-8) off the board until a run-scoring double by Nathan Gomez in the ninth.
Collin Cargill then entered the game and allowed an RBI single by pinch hitter James Lavinskas to cut the margin to 8-7, but then induced a double play to end the contest.
Horn allowed two runs on four hits with a walk and two strikeouts to collect the victory, before Cargill collected his sixth save of the campaign.
The two teams complete the series, Saturday, with a doubleheader. The first game is set for 2 p.m., while the second contest will not start earlier than 6 p.m.
