HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss softball team dropped both games of the doubleheader against East Carolina Saturday, falling 6-0 and 5-1, Saturday at the USM Softball Complex.
GAME ONE: East Carolina 6, Southern Miss 0| Game One Box
East Carolina scored runs in the second, third and fourth innings in posting a 6-0 victory over the Golden Eagles Saturday.
In the meantime, ECU's starter Toni Paisley (20-5) almost pitched a perfect game in the process as the Golden Eagles were able to get only runner aboard courtesy of a Pirate error in what should have been the final out of the game. Paisley pitched seven innings of no-hit ball in the shutout victory and recorded 12 strikeouts.
In the top of the second with two outs, the Pirates scored two runs on two hits in taking a 2-0 lead. Alex Fieldhouse started the rally with a single and Jasmine drew a walk and they both scored off a Cheslea Kaluhiokalani-Glackin double down the left field line.
ECU added a run in the third when the Pirates got a run on a bases loaded walk. Courteny Ramos entered the game in relief of starter Gabby Luciani to record the final out with the bases still loaded.
A walk for Kaluhiokalani-Glackin would start out the top of the fourth inning for East Carolina, followed by a fielder's choice by Kristi Oshiro that advanced Glackin to second. A wild pitch moved both runners to third and second. After a line out and strikeout, Suzanne Riggs single through the left side plated Glackin and Oshiro.
Luciani (2-4) took the loss for the Eagles pitching 2.2 innings. She gave up three runs on three hits, struck out three and walked four.
GAME TWO: East Carolina 5, Southern Miss 1|Game Two Box
Southern Miss (10-23, 0-8) banged out seven hits, but only push one run across as East Carolina knocked off the Eagles in the second game of the doubleheader, 5-1.
East Carolina (27-10, 7-4) put up three runs in the top of the third as Kaluhiokalani-Glackin drew a one out walk and stole second. After Oshiro grounded out to the shortstop, Rebecca Lee doubled to send Glackin home. Jordan Lewis then blasted her third homer of the season in collecting two RBI and gave the Pirates a 3-0 lead.
Southern Miss continued to struggle offensively as Sutton worked her third three-up and three-down inning against the Eagles.
The Golden Eagles threatened to score in the home half of the fourth after Courtney Hill recorded the team's first hit of the game. Stephanie Shiflet followed with a single just out of reach of the second baseman to put runners at first and second with no outs. Sutton was able to get out of the jam when Jill Mathis grounded into a fielder's choice that got the lead runner followed by pop foul to the catcher and a fly out to center.
ECU added two more runs in the top of the fifth as Oshiro led off with a single and got all the way to third on a Golden Eagle error in left. Chanell Thurman made a diving catch on a hard liner to keep the runners on, but Riggs then doubled down the left field line to score Oshiro and Lee.
Southern Miss threatened again in the bottom of the fifth when Thurman was hit by a pitch and reached third on a pinch hit single by Danielle LaPointe with only one out.
The Golden Eagles finally put a run on the board in the home half of the sixth, snapping a 38-inning scoreless drought against East Carolina when Jill Mathis recorded a one-out single and reached third on Leslie LeJune's single down the right field line. Britney Dinelt's base hit to right scored Mathis.
Seven different players recorded a hit for the Golden Eagles as Oshiro and Riggs tallied two hits apiece for ECU.
Beth Dietrich (5-11) went the distance for Southern Miss and took the loss. Sutton (7-5) got the win, giving up only one run while striking out five.
The two teams will meet for the final time in the series at 11 a.m. Sunday.
