Softball Drops Series Finale to East Carolina, 8-1

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss softball team fell to East Carolina 8-1 Sunday in the series finale that lasted only six innings due to time constraints for team travel.
The Pirates jumped on the scoreboard 2-0 in the first inning. Kristi Oshiro drew a walk and Lee reached on a fielder's choice, but Oshiro got all the way to third on a Golden Eagle error. After an out, Suzanne Riggs doubled down the left to plate Oshiro and Lee.
East Carolina opened up a 7-0 lead after a five-run third inning with all five runs coming with two outs. After Lee was hit by a pitch and Jordan Lewis walked, the Eagle defense stiffened to get the next two outs before the Pirates loaded the bases with Sissy Jimenez was hit by a pitch. Kai Clark recorded a two-RBI single that scored Lee and Lewis while Jimenez advanced to third. Jasmine Robbins' single scored Jimenez and Clark which prompted a second pitching change for the Eagles. ECU got its final run of the inning on a pass ball.
Southern Miss got a run back in the home half of the inning when Britney Dinelt led off with a single and Leslie LeJune added a base hit to put runners at first and second. Taylor Brown's single to center scored Dinelt. The Pirates' ace, Toni Paisley, settled in and retired the next three batters in order
East Carolina added one more run the top of the fifth as Alex Fieldhouse reached base on an error and pinch runner Taylor Megargel came around to score on a RBI single by Robbins.
The Eagles collected one more hit in the fourth when Brittany Lilly led off, but Paisley did not allow another base runner in the final nine batters she faced.
The Eagles had four hits in the game with four different players recording a hit. Starter Courtney Ramos (1-7) took the loss, allowing two unearned runs on one and striking out two in 1.2 innings. Gabby Luciani allowed four earned runs on two hits in 1.0 innings of relief. Beth Dietrich, who worked the final 3.1 innings, gave up one unearned run on five hits, struck out two and did not walk a batter.
Paisley (21-5) got the win, giving up one earned run of four hits in going the distance. She struck out eight.
Southern Miss travels to Madison, Miss., to face in-state opponent Mississippi State in a single game at Liberty Park at 6:30 p.m., on Wednesday.
