Golden Eagles Blank UNO 1-0 in Series Finale

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Junior Jonathan Thompson allowed one hit over eight shutout innings to lead Southern Miss to a 1-0 decision over New Orleans here Sunday afternoon at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson to complete the three-game sweep of the Privateers.
The Golden Eagles won for the fifth-straight time to improve to 27-8 on the season, while the Privateers fell to 3-32.
For Thompson, it was his longest outing of the year as he retired the final 10 batters he faced and 13 of the final 14. His lone hit allowed was a two-out single to left by UNO centerfielder Blake LeBlanc in the fifth. The right-handed pitcher fanned four, walked two and hit a batter in the contest to up his record to 4-0.
"He was outstanding," Southern Miss coach Scott Berry said. "He had a good mix with his pitches, and we felt like he really located them well. We played great defense behind him with our third errorless game in a row, so we're really proud of that as coaches."
Collin Cargill then came in to retire three straight batters, including a strikeout to end the game, to earn his fifth save of the year.
Isaac Rodriguez led the Golden Eagles with two of their eight hits, but it was Ashley Graeter's RBI single in the sixth which proved to be the difference in the contest.
With one out, Marc Bourgeois singled to center. After Rodriguez pushed Bourgeois to third on a single of his own, Grater took a 2-0 Tyler Sanders offering back up the middle to score Bourgeois for the only run of the contest.
Sanders (1-8) threw well for UNO over 7 1/3 innings as he allowed the game's lone run on eight hits and three walks with two strikeouts to suffer the loss.
The game time of 1:38 tied for the shortest contest of the season and was the briefest nine-inning game for Southern Miss in 2011 and second quickest in its history.
The Golden Eagles return to action when they play LSU at Zephyr Field in Metairie, La., on Wednesday. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
