Men's Tennis Falls to UAB, 5-2

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss men's tennis team fell 5-2 to UAB in the second match of the Conference USA Shootout Friday afternoon at the USM Tennis Courts.
The Blazers started the match by winning the Nos. 2 and 3 doubles to take the point. Seniors Jan Burmeister and Julien Roussel held on to take the No. 1 doubles, 8-6, against David Zimmermann and Tom Puetz. UAB's Daniel Moser and Lucas Dirube teamed to beat Stewart Gammill and Michael Sims 8-0 at No. 3 while the duo of Danny Manlow and Chris Helliar topped Paulo Alvarado and Jovan Zeljkovic, 8-6 at the two seed to clinch the point.
Helliar added another point for the Blazers with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Sims at the No. 6 singles. Moser made it a 3-0 match by beating Gammill 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5. Puetz clinched the match at the No. 4 spot when he defeated Alvarado, 6-2, 6-4. Manlow rounded out the scoring for UAB with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Zeljkovic at No. 3. Southern Miss' Jan Burmeister notched the Eagles' first point of the match with his 6-5, 5-7, 1-0 (10-7) win over Dirube at the No. 2 position. Roussel recorded the Eagles' final point of the match with a 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (10-5) victory over Zimmermann at the one-spot.
The teams will be in action again on Saturday with UAB taking on Tulane at 10 a.m., and Southern Miss finishing the day against East Carolina at 2 p.m.
In the first match of the day, Tulane topped East Carolina, 4-2.
