Men's Tennis Tops Lamar, 5-2

BEAUMONT, Texas - The Southern Miss men's tennis team defeated Lamar, 5-2, at the Thompson Family Tennis Center Sunday afternoon.
The Golden Eagles improve to 3-12 on the season, while Lamar dropped to 6-7.
Southern Miss started the day by taking the doubles point with wins at one and two. The Cardinals started doubles picking up a win at No. 3 doubles by default.
Jovan Zeljkovic and Paulo Alvarado picked up the win at No. 2 doubles over Marton Horvath and Robert Lee, 8-5. Jan Burmeister and Julien Roussel outlasted Denis Ermilov and Dusan Savkovic in a tie-breaker, 9-8 (7-4) at the top seed to clinch the point.
The Golden Eagles then took four out of six courts in singles to get the win but not without a fight. With the match even at 1-1, Lamar took a 2-1 lead after posting a win on court five. Savkovic downed Michael Sims, 6-0, 6-0.
The remaining four matches were hotly contested with three sets using a third set to determine a winner. Burmeister battled Lee on court two, posting a 7-5, 7-6 (7-5) victory.
Roussel fought back from a set down to take a win at No. 1 over Ermilov, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1. Zeljkovic took the first set in a marathon set, 7-6 (13-11), lost the second set, 5-7, then, took the final set, 6-4, against Carlos Valdenebro.
Alvarado wrapped things up with a 7-6 (7-4), 5-7, 6-4, over Horvath.
The Golden Eagles return home to host Florida A&M on Mar. 20 at 12 p.m., at the USM Tennis Courts.
