HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Tyler Koelling tallied three hits and drove in four runs while Geoffrey Thomas limited Missouri State to just one run over 6 2/3 to lead Southern Miss to a 12-1 baseball victory here Sunday afternoon at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
The win completed the three-game sweep for the Golden Eagles (11-3) as Southern Miss scored in double figures in all three contests.
Koelling collected one of his hits in a seven-run fifth-inning, driving in a couple of runs on a single. Marc Bourgeois, who tallied three hits as well, added a two-run homer in - his second of the year - and B.A. Vollmuth added a two-run double in the frame.
Thomas (3-1) also kept the Bears (8-7) at bay by scattering six hits and four walks with four strikeouts to get the victory. The sophomore from Stone Mountain, Ga., gave up two hits to start the fifth, including a double from Aaron Conway. Spiker Helms plated the Bears' lone run with a groundout and then Thomas enticed a lineout to third and a strikeout to get out of the jam.
The Golden Eagles jumped out early with three runs in the third, including a sacrifice fly by Travis Creel for the first run of the contest. Catcher Jared Bales then homered over the scoreboard in left-centerfield, a two-run blast, for his first homer of the campaign.
The Golden Eagles added a two-run double by Koelling in the seventh to complete the scoring.
Southern Miss touched MSU starter Blake Barber for four runs on seven hits over five-plus innings with a walk and four strikeouts to suffer the loss and fall to 2-2.
The victory ended a homestand in which the Golden Eagles improved to 9-1 at "The Pete" this season.
Southern Miss returns to action Tuesday when they travel to Natchitoches, La., to face Northwestern State in a 4:30 p.m., contest. Please note that time change from a previously released game time. The contest versus the Demons starts a five-game road swing for the Golden Eagles.
