Troy Uses Big Inning to Beat Eagles in Finale

TROY, Ala. - Todd McRae had two hits and drove in six runs as Troy used a big third inning to defeat Southern Miss 13-4 here Sunday afternoon at Riddle-Pace Field and capture the three-game series.
The Trojans (6-1) exploded for seven runs in the third inning to take a 9-0 advantage as McRae highlighted the frame with a bases-clearing double.
McRae struck again two innings later with a two-run double to highlight the Trojan 10-hit attack.
Southern Miss starter Josh Thomason got tagged for six runs on four hits and two walks over two-plus innings to suffer the loss and fall to 1-1 on the season. Thomason was the first of seven Golden Eagle pitchers on the day.
Troy got six innings from Drew Hull (2-0) who limited the Eagles to two runs on five hits and two walks with five strikeouts. Garrett McHenry allowed two runs over two innings and Tyson Workman came in to work a scoreless ninth.
B.A. Vollmuth led the Golden Eagles with two hits and three RBI on the day. Kameron Brunty plated USM's first run in the fifth with a double and then Vollmuth added a bases-loaded sacrifice fly to cut the gap to 9-2.
Vollmuth then doubled home two more runs in the seventh to complete the team's scoring. Tyler Koelling added a single to extend his hitting streak to 19 games.
The Golden Eagles (6-2) return to action Wednesday when they travel to Tuscaloosa to face Alabama in a 6:05 p.m., contest.
