HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss got two hits apiece from Tyler Koelling, B.A. Vollmuth and Marc Bourgeois, but could not overcome giving up runs in each of the first three innings in a 4-3 loss to Troy Friday night at Riddle-Pace Field.
The Golden Eagles (5-1) lost for the first time this season as the Trojans (5-0) got to Southern Miss starter Todd McInnis early.
The Trojans plated solo runs in the first two frames and added two more in the third to chase the preseason All-American after three innings. McInnis (1-1) allowed four runs (two earned) on four hits and three walks with five strikeouts to suffer the defeat.
Southern Miss then shutdown the Trojans thanks to freshman Jackson Posey of Hattiesburg, who scattered three hits and a walk over five innings and fanned three without allowing a run in his first collegiate outing.
That strong pitching helped the Eagles fight back in the contest. Mark Ellis tallied his first homer of the season to lead off the fifth with a shot off the right-field foul pole over the 30-foot wall in rightfield.
B.A. Vollmuth, who also tallied a double, homered to left-centerfield in the sixth to cut the gap to 4-2 as he posted his second round-tripper of the season. Southern Miss then scored their final run on a Dillon Day sacrifice fly in the seventh, and tried to rally in the eighth off of Troy starter Tyler Ray.
Ray, who improved to 2-0 on the season after giving up three runs on nine hits and a walk with three strikeouts over 7 1/3 innings, gave up singles to Koelling and Doleac. Koelling also singled in the fourth to extend his hitting streak to 17 games.
Troy then called on closer Garrett McHenry, who recorded two groundouts to end the threat. McHenry then got his second save of the year as he retired the visitors in order in the ninth.
Troy got its opening run in the first on a passed ball to Adam Bryant. Logan Pierce then was plated by Bryant in the second with a triple and T.J. Rivera scored via an error in the third while Boone Snear scored on a single by Tyson Workman to complete the Troy's scoring.
Game two of the series is set for 1 p.m., Saturday.
