Southern Miss Women's Basketball Team Set to Host ULM

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss women's basketball team (2-5) is looking to snap a three-game losing streak when the Lady Eagles host ULM (1-8) in non-conference action on Dec. 10 at 4 p.m.
The Lady Eagle contest can be heard on WHXB-FM 96.5 or at SouthernMiss.com with Josh West, voice of the Lady Eagles, providing the play-by-play action and legendary head coach Kay James as his color analyst.
Southern Miss Preview
The Lady Eagles are coming off a 70-44 loss at UALR on Dec. 3 in Little Rock, Ark. Jamierra Faulkner led the way with a team-high 18 points while Tanecka Carey chipped in 12 points. UALR held Southern Miss without a field goal the final 9:50 of the game as the Lady Eagles recorded their worst shooting game of the season, connecting on 32.6 (15-46) percent from the field.
Carey continues to lead the team in scoring at 19.6 points per game with Faulkner is close behind at 17.0 points per contest. Nitesha Pierce leads the team in rebounding at 6.4 rebounds per contest while Ance Celmina adds 6.3 boards. As a team, USM is shooting 43.6 percent from the field and only 59.1 percent from the line while averaging 64.9 points and 40.1 rebounds per outing.
ULM Preview
ULM is 1-8 after a 78-68 win over Nicholls State on Dec. 3 to snap an eight game losing streak. Senior Larrie Williams tied a career-high with 21 points to power the ULM women's basketball team to a 78-68 win over Nicholls State Saturday night inside Fant-Ewing Coliseum. The Warhawks outscored the Colonels 40-26 in the paint and forced 24 turnovers. ULM also registered a season-high 14 steals. Shantrell Shaw scored a career-high 18 points and pulled down six rebounds, while Elizabeth Torres added 13 points, six rebounds and six assists.
Williams leads the team in with 14.0 points while Torres is second at 11.8 points per game. Marion Zollicoffer is averaging a team-high 6.7 rebounds per game. As a team, the Warhawks are averaging 62.1 points and 40.1 rebounds while shooting 37.6 percent from the field and 62.9 percent from the line. Head Coach Mona Martin is in her 17th season at ULM.
The Series: Southern Miss vs. ULM
Southern Miss leads the overall series with ULM 13-7 in a series dating back to the 1978-78 year. ULM defeated Southern Miss in the initial meeting, 88-82, in Monroe on Nov. 17, 1978. The Lady Eagles are 9-1 against ULM in Hattiesburg. The Warhawks won last season's contest, 75-57, in Monroe.
What's Next?
Following the ULM Game, Southern Miss travels to in-state rival Mississippi State on Dec. 16 for a 7 p.m. contest.
