Southern Miss Dominates Belhaven, 93-48

With the victory, Southern Miss improved to 11-2. The 11 wins tie last year's squad for the most wins in school history before January. They have also won seven straight games, the most since winning the first seven games of the 2006-07 season.
Darnell Dodson led the Golden Eagles with a career-high 24 points on 10-of-13 shooting. He also pulled down seven rebounds. Jonathan Mills also had a career-high with 17 points and seven rebounds. Torye Pelham added 13 points, while Angelo Johnson and Maurice Bolden had 12 points apiece. Bolden added seven rebounds and Neil Watson dished out six assists.
"I just liked the fact that we have a huge upside," said Southern Miss head coach Larry Eustachy. "This is as unselfish a team as I've had in my time here. I really like the potential. That's what I got out of this game. We're going to get a lot better."
Southern Miss scored the first five points of the game. Belhaven answered with three straight buckets for its only lead of the game, but Southern Miss came back with a 31-2 run over a 10 minute span, with USM eventually taking a 49-19 lead into halftime. It was the fourth largest halftime lead in school history.
The Black and Gold led by as many as 48 in the second half.
Southern Miss shot a season-high 55.7-percent (34-of-61) while holding Belhaven to just 29.5-percent (18-of-61). The Golden Eagles connected on 7-of-15 (46.7%) three-pointers, while the Blazers hit just 5.6-percent (1-of-18) of their three's, the second straight game that the Eagles held its opponent to under 10.0% from three. The Golden Eagles also outrebounded Belhaven, 51-to-28, and had a huge advantage in bench points, 51-to-9.
Daryl Arnold led the Blazers with 14 points and Woodie Howard added 11.
Southern Miss closes out its three-game homestand this Thursday, December 29, when it hosts in-state foe Alcorn State. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. CT.
