Lady Eagles Host In-state Foe, Jackson State

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss women's basketball team (4-6) plays it second-straight home game when the Lady Eagles host in-state foe Jackson State Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Southern Miss Preview The Lady Eagles are coming off a 67-62 win over South Alabama on Dec. 18. Guards Tanecka Carey and Jamierra Faulkner combined for 46 points in the win. Carey led the way with a game-high 26 points, including 22 in the second half. Faulkner tossed in 20 points while grabbing a team-high eight rebounds, handing out eight assists and five steals. Southern Miss connected on 53.8 percent from behind the arc.
Carey continues to lead the team in scoring at 20.0 points per game with Faulkner is next at 16.4 points per contest. Carey also is tops on the team in rebounding a 6.3 boards per game with Ance Celmina next at 6.2. As a team, USM is shooting 43.3 percent from the field and only 62.1 percent from the line while averaging 65.5 points and 40.4 rebounds per outing.
Scouting Jackson State
Jackson State defeat Tougaloo College 63-54 in non-conference action Monday night improving to 2-5 for the season. Three Lady Tigers scored in double-digits. Tiffany Kellum just missed a double-double for the game. She scored a game high 26 points and grabbed nine rebounds in 32 minutes. Kellum went 9-12 from the field and 8-11 from the free throw line. Rachel Jones followed with 13 points and five assist in 31 minutes. She also had three steals. Beatrice Banks came off the bench to chip in 11 points and was 7-8 from the free throw line in 19 minutes. Daria Hester also came off the bench to score eight points. She also pulled down five rebounds.
Kellum leads the team in scoring and rebounding with 10.6 points and 7.9 rebounds per outing. Jones is next in points at 8.4 per game. As a team, Jackson State is averaging 55.6 points and 39.1 rebounds while shooting 34.0 percent from the field and 64.1 percent from the line. Interim Head Coach Larry McNeil is in his first season at Jackson State.
