Women's Basketball Team Hosts South Alabama

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss women's basketball team (3-6) returns home to begin a two-game homestand, hosting South Alabama in non-conference action on Sunday at 2 p.m.The Lady Eagle contest can be heard on WHXB-FM 96.5 or at www.SouthernMiss.com with Josh West, voice of the Lady Eagles, providing the play-by-play action and legendary head coach Kay James as his color analyst.
Southern Miss Preview
The Lady Eagles are coming off a 71-57 loss at Mississippi State on Friday night. The Lady Eagles played evenly with Mississippi State for the final 35:18 of the game, but it was the first 4:52 that turned out to be the difference in a 71-57 loss to State. Junior Tanecka Carey led the way with a team-high 21 points followed by Niesha Pierce 13 and Ance Celmina chipped in 11. Carey was the top rebounder with nine boards and Celmina added eight.
Carey continues to lead the team in scoring at 19.3 points per game with Faulkner is next at 16.0 points per contest. Celmina leads the team in rebounding with a 6.4 per game average and Carey is next at 6.2. As a team, USM is shooting 43.2 percent from the field and only 62.8 percent from the line while averaging 65.3 points and 40.3 rebounds per outing.
South Alabama
South Alabama comes into the game at 7-3 after a 57-52 win over Talladega on Dec. 10. South Alabama fought off a sluggish performance and rallied late to pick up the five-point victory. Mansa El led the Lady Jags with 14 points while Sarda Peterson and Camille Reynolds added 11 points apiece.
Reynolds leads the team in scoring with 11.9 points while El is right behind at 11.6 points per game. Taylor Ammons is averaging a team-high 7.2 rebounds per game. As a team, South Alabama is averaging 64.0 points and 44.6 rebounds while shooting 34.0 percent from the field and 64.0 percent from the line. USA has connected on 72 three -pointers. Head Coach Rick Pietri is in his 12th season at South Alabama.
