Golden Eagle Volleyball Falls to UAB, 3-1

Senior Amelia Hendrickson tallied her fifth double-double with 12 kills and 12 digs for the Golden Eagles (7-9, 1-3). Setter Kelsea Seymour dished out 36 assists to go with 14 digs in posting her eight double-double of the season. Libero Lisa Knecht collected a match high 27 digs while Elizabeth Rinaudo added 16 digs.
UAB's Kate Morrell led all players with 14 kills in helping the Blazers to a 15-2 record overall and 5-0 in league play. Five Blazers recorded double digit digs led by Heather Thomas with 22 followed by Alison Woods with 18, Thais Soares had 14 and Morrell and Becca Howard added 11 digs apiece.
The two teams played evenly early to start the first set. With the scored tied 9-9, Southern Miss used a 5-1 run for the 14-10 lead and forced the Blazers to take a timeout. Out of the timeout, Halie Ecker had a kill to push the lead to 15-10. From there, the Golden Eagles were able to maintain the lead for the remainder of the set for a 25-16 win.
Southern Miss ran out to an 8-3 lead to start the second set due in part to five Hendrickson kills. After an UAB timeout, the Blazers tallied a Morrell kill to help spark a 12-7 run in taking a 16-14 lead. Out of the Southern Miss timeout, the Blazers tacked on another point with an Ashley Ricks and Kirsten Gallagher block. A Seymour kill and Ashley Mell and Lauren Sears block knotted the set at 17-17. The two teams traded points until UAB scored three unanswered points for the 21-18 lead and a Southern Miss timeout. The Blazers continued to pull away but USM was out of timeouts. UAB scored four of the final five points en route to the 25-20 win.
UAB opened the third set scoring nine of the first 10 points. The Eagles had no answer for the Blazer firepower as UAB cruised to a 25-11 win. UAB held the Eagles to just six kills on -.132 hitting while putting down 11 kills on a .290 hitting clip.
Southern Miss led 3-1 to start the fourth set, but UAB came right back to tie the set at 4-4. The teams continued to battle as the set featured 10 ties and five lead changes. With the scored tied at 11-11, UAB used a 4-1 run behind three kills and a block in taking a 15-12 lead. Out of a Southern Miss timeout, Hendrickson put down a kill, but UAB added three straight kills for an 18-13 lead. The Eagles were forced to use their second timeout and responded with back-to-back kills and a Blazer error to cut the lead to 18-16. UAB called its first timeout, but it didn't slow the Eagles as USM rallied to take a 20-18 lead. The two teams battled to a 22-22 tied after trading the next seven points. UAB then ended the match by scoring the final three points on three Eagle errors for a 25-22 win.
Southern Miss will now travel to Tulsa for two matches on Oct. 8 and Oct. 9.
