A Look at East Carolina
East Carolina is 7-10 overall and 1-3 in the league after posting a 66-55 win over Rice. Jean Best led the way with a team-high 17 points. Crystal Wilson and Best grabbed nine rebounds apiece.
Coach Heather Macy is in her first season at East Carolina and returns 12 letterwinners including all five starters from last year's team that finished 23-11 and advanced to the second round of the WNIT. Kim Gay leads the team with 11.9 points with Ashley Clarke at 10.1 points per game. Gay also leads the team in rebounding with 6.6 boards per game.
As a team, East Carolina is averaging 73.8 points and 38.9 rebounds while shooting 41.2 percent from the field and 68.3 percent from the line.
The Series
This is the 16th meeting between the two teams dating back to the 2000-01 season. East Carolina leads the overall series against Southern Miss, 9-6. The two teams faced each other for the first time on Feb. 22, 2001, in Hattiesburg with the Pirates winning that matchup. ECU won two of the three meetings last season including a win in the Conference USA Tournament.
