Golden Eagle Softball Shuts Out Marshall, 6-0

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Freshman Gabby Luciani allowed only three hits and struck out five batters in her third complete game shutout in a 6-0 win over Marshall Saturday night.
Southern Miss improved to 19-22 and more importantly, 4-12, in league play while Marshall dropped to 24-23 and 3-13.
The Herd's Katie Murphree took the loss for Marshall giving up six runs on six hits, but only two were earned while striking out four.
Through the first two and a half innings of play, both team managed one hit apiece. The Golden Eagles got on the board first when Megan Hill led off the bottom of the third with a triple. Murphree then struckout the next batter before Alexis Hurley reached base on a fielder's choice that scored Hill. Hurley advanced to second on an illegal pitch. Logan James drew a walk to put runners on second and first, but Murphree got out of the inning with consecutive strikeouts.
Marshall put runners on base in the top of the fifth when Melissa Loesing reached with a bunt single and Marcena Bertoldo doubled in the sixth, but both runners were left stranded.
Southern Miss added five runs in the bottom half of the sixth when Chanell Thurman reached base on an error then moved to second on a single by Castellvi. Pinch hitter Christina Roosmalen then singled up the middle to load the bases with pinch runner Stephanie Shiflet at third and Castellvi at second. Leslie LeJune then lined a shot into right field to score Shiflet. Castellvi scored on a sacrifice fly by Britney Dinelt. Hill drew her eighth intentional walk to load the bases and Jill Mathis blasted a triple to right center.
Marshall opened the seventh with Jessica Hughes drawing a walk, but Luciani retired the next batters with a pop-up, strikeout and ground out.
Both teams take the field Sunday at 12 p.m., in a nationally televised game on CBS C in the first of two games. The second game is set to start approximately 30 minutes after the first game.
