PEARL, Miss. - The Southern Miss baseball team fell 11-6 to No. 17 ranked Ole Miss at Trustmark Park Tuesday evening in front of 4,287 fans.
The annual matchup in Pearl, Mississippi saw 27 hits, 21 runners left on base and 17 runs scored in the three and a half hour contest.
"Ole Miss scored six of their runs on walks and hit batters and that turned out to be the difference in the game," head coach Scott Berry said. "I was proud of the way we came out in the first and responded to their two runs with four of our own, but after that it was like we shut things down, we had our opportunities but could not take advantage of them."
Hits were not a problem for Southern Miss, they had 13 in the game, 12 singles, but left 11 runners on base. Mark Ellis led the attack with three hits while Kameron Brunty, Taylor Walker and Adam Doleac each had two hits a piece.
Brunty had the only extra base hit, a double to lead off the top of the first.
Southern Miss starting pitcher Jeff Stanly only lasted one inning, surrendering four runs on five hits.
"Everything starts on the mound and you expect your starter to give you five or six good innings and when that does not happen its not going to be easy," Berry added.
In all, the Golden Eagles used six different pitchers with freshman Dillon Day taking the loss.
In the top of the first, Stanley's two first innings walks came back to hurt him as both runner scored on a two-out RBI double by Zack Miller to put Ole Miss up 2-0.

The Rebels threatened for the big inning as the loaded the bases with no one out but true freshman Dillon Day entered the game and struck out the side, leaving all three runners on base.
The Rebels retook the lead in the top of the fourth as Matt Synder was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Zack Miller singled home two more runs to put Ole Miss up 7-4. Taylor Hightower continued the rally with a RBI single that chased Day from the game.
Ole Miss continued to pad their lead in the top of the seventh as Alex Yarbrough hit an RBI single off Seth Hester, ending his evening after 2.1 innings of work. Matt Snyder added a check swing ground ball that resulted in a RBI and Mille Doubled home a run to put Ole Miss up 11-4.
