IRVING, Texas - Senior pitcher Scott Copeland was named the Conference USA Pitcher of the Week today, selected by the C-USA office.
For Copeland it is his first C-USA honor and the second time this season a Southern Miss pitcher has earned the honor as Todd McInnis earned Pitcher of the Week after his opening weekend start vs. Northwestern State.
Copeland (3-0) pitched the best game of his career with a three-hit, compete game shutout over visiting Missouri State Saturday afternoon in a 6-0 victory.
He completely dominated the Missouri State hitters all afternoon, needing only 98 pitches and an hour and 54 minutes for the complete game shutout. He retired the final 11 hitters and 16 of the last 17 hitters to complete his masterful performance.
On the afternoon Copeland rolled 15 ground ball outs, including a double play, while facing only two hitters over the minimum and striking out a career high eight batters without walking anyone.
He allowed only three hits in the game, all ground balls that made it through the infield, and only one runner reached as far as second base.
Marshall junior catcher Victor Gomez and Rice sophomore third basemen Anthony Rendon were been named the co-Hitters of the Week after putting up consistent, strong offensive production this past week.
