HATTIESBURG, Miss. - In their Centennial Celebration game, Southern Miss (6-7 Overall, 0-1 Conference) welcomed back former players and staff to watch the Golden Eagles take a 7-0 victory over cross-town foe William Carey Friday afternoon at the Southern Miss Tennis Complex.
After coaches from both schools introduced doubles pairings, Southern Miss and William Carey took to the courts where Diego Machucha and Oscar Machucha set the tone for the day opening with an 8-0 victory over Toni Ganta and Demar Walker at No. 2 doubles.
At No. 3 doubles, Markus Wessinghage and Strate Krstevski continued the trend with an 8-1 victory over Steven Georgia and Alejandro Ordonez.
As their teammates watched on, the No. 1 doubles pair of Jan Burmeisster and Julien Roussel wrestled through a back-and-forth match with Anton Klochkov and Dominik Kardell. Sweeping serves by Burmeisster and strong net play by the Golden Eagles proved to be the edge as Southern Miss swept the doubles competition with a final 8-4 victory.
In singles competition, normal No. 1 singles player Patricio Alvarado took a break for the day to allow Krstevski to move into the spot to take on Klochkov. Though Klochkov was able to keep many games close, Krstevki proved to be too much and the Macdeonian came away with the victory at 6-1, 6-2.
Burmeisster and O. Machucha were perfect on the day in singles competition at No. 3 and No. 6, respectively, at 6-0, 6-0 each.
Roussel made quick work of Georgia and allowed just two games to get away from him as he was victorious 6-1, 6-1.
D. Machucha and Wessinghage closed up the day for Southern Miss with victories of 6-4, 6-0 and 6-1, 6-1 respectively.
The Black and Gold will now enjoy a break and come back March 23 to take on Nicholls State at the Southern Miss Tennis Complex.
